Hey! My name is Taylor Nelson and I am the owner of Family Tree Therapy.
The seed of an idea for Family Tree Therapy was planted over 15 years ago. I've spent almost two decades as a Social Worker, supporting families and kids in our community. Throughout those years, I often referred children to agencies that supported mental health. Many of those families I worked with were able to get the support they needed. Some were not. These were the kids that were often labelled as too busy or 'not ready' for therapeutic work.
My experience as a Social Worker taught me that not all spaces are child-centered. Child therapy was being offered to kids in spaces designed for adults. I was sending children to therapy offices that had a dollhouse shoved into one corner of a room and worksheets on the table. This didn't always work for kids. Over the last several years, I started imagining a place that I wish I could refer any child to.
In my imaginings, this place would have enough space that kids could move around and explore. They could make a mess, be loud, make mistakes and decide what happens next. No child would ever be 'too much' and everyone would find something they needed to communicate. So I built it. The place I wish I could have referred every child in our community to.
Family Tree Therapy is designed as a child-centered therapy space. A dedicated spot where kids can show up exactly as they are.
